The long-awaited regeneration of the Spriggs Road flats in Gurranabraher has been cancelled by Cork City Council due to a lack of funding. The revamp, of the flats has been years in the pipeline but local councillor Patricia Gosch says that the plan has now been put on ice indefinitely because Cork City Council, like every other local authority is now facing massive funding cuts. In addition, it has also been confirmed that home improvement grants for elderly and disabled people have also been stopped due to the funding crisis. Cllr Gosch said, "This is heartbreaking for people who really need a helping hand. We were told by the Taoiseach that the cuts he was planning would not affect the most vulnerable in society but in reality the exact opposite is happening. "It is the poor, the sick and the elderly who being asked to pick up the tab for Mr Cowen's failure to manage the economy. Everyday I meet people who simply don't know what to do and am forced to tell them that funds are not going to be made available for vital works that would have made a real improvement to their quality of life". |
