Kevin Glavin was the popular winner of the final of Cork's Got Talent last Saturday night. He plans to release his single 'Pour it Out' next week and donate the proceeds to charity. Kevin revealed his initial reticence to be in the competition to the Cork Independent: "I was very reluctant to enter Cork's Got Talent at the start as it didn't really appeal to me but I ended up winning it!
It was great fun and they looked after me very well. My family really enjoyed seeing me win it too."
Kevin is a twenty year old singer songwriter from Douglas. He performed his own song 'Pour It Out' at the final. He was the pre-final favourite with Paddy Power.
"I started playing guitar when I was 10 or 11. My influences would be people like people like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Tom Waits. I only started singing about three or four years. I started writing about three or four years ago," he said.
Around 1,000 people attended the final at the Silver Springs Moran Hotel. Kevin's prize included €2,000 and his single 'Pour it out', will be recorded this week and released next week with the proceeds going to his chosen charity, Cork Simon Community.
This single will be available from iTunes with a limited numbers of CDs produced for radio stations. Kevin hopes to "make a worthwhile contribution to Cork Simon Community".
Kevin said: "I'm recording today, Thursday and it will be sent off to be mastered.
The proceeds are going to the Simon Community. I know a few people working there and it's a great charity. They have a musical element as well."
In the final, he beat 15 other performers to take the prize. Leon Murphy came second winning €1,000 and the 14 runners up got €150 each.
Event organiser Jenny O'Flynn said: "Kevin's performances throughout the competition have been consistently excellent in each show and he is a natural performer with an exceptional quality about him".
The final, like the other heats, was hosted by Dave Mac of Red FM. The 16 acts were cut down to five and these final acts battled it out to win.
The final five acts were chosen by audience and judges and they performed a second song with the winner was chosen by audience vote only.
"I'm doing the music management course in Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa. It's really good. They teach us all the different aspects of the music industry from musical theory to sound engineering and management.
"I'm definitely hoping to have a career in the music industry, although I know it's hard enough to get into the music business. It would be nice to make a living out of it," he revealed.
"I play around Cork city a bit. I played at the gig last night in the Crane Lane for the Fighting Blindness charity. I often play at An Realt Dearg on Monday nights, which is an impromptu fireside affair with different singers and songwriters."
Cork's Got Talent under 18s first semi final took place last Sunday, with the second semi final on Sunday 21 March and the final on the following Sunday.
