A Proposal that Cork City Council grant Leisureworld a €1 million interest-free loan to help fund a €1.6 million expansion plan will is being question by several councillors.

Leisureworld is a private company established by Cork City Council to run the leisure centre and also operates another facility in Churchfield. Acting Director of Services in the recreation, Amenity and Culture Directorate of Cork City Council is now proposing that councillors approve a €1 million interest-free loan to the company which would be repayable in equal instalments over 10 years.

Sinn Féin’s Cllr Jonathon O’Brien however is not happy with the arrangement. “Either Leisureworld is a private company or it isn’t,” said Cllr O’Brien.

“If any private company came to the Council looking for a loan of this sort we would expect to see proof that they can pay it back and a needs assessment of the proposal we are funding. We would also expect to be able to see the accounts of the company in question.

“In this case we have received none of this information, simply because it’s Leisureworld and it’s not good enough. This is public money being lent to a private company. On the other hand, we also don’t have any council control over Leisureworld’s operations, pricing etc. It seems we have the worst of both worlds”.
