Socialist Party councillor Mick Barry is calling on City Manager Joe Gavin to take a tough line on businesses in Cork who are not up to date with their water rates payments.
The issue was raised at a meeting of Cork City Council earlier this week where discussion of the Council’s Financial Statement to September 2007 revealed that only €5.5 million of the Council’s target of €10 million in commercial water rates had been collected by the end of September. Cllr Barry stated that to be on target the Council should have collected at least €7.5 million of the €10 million total meaning that payments were currently more than €2 million in arrears. Cllr Barry said, “I will be putting down questions for the City Manager in the weeks ahead aimed at identifying the level of non-payment from big business in the city. I believe that a hard line should be taken with big businesses who are not paying for their company’s supply of water”.
