The trial of three English men, charged in connection with the largest drugs haul in the history of the state, has been adjourned until Monday (May 26) next.

Joesph Daly (41),  Perrie Wharrie (48) and Martin Wanden (45) appeared before the Cork Criminal Court yesterday morning (Wednesday, May 21) charged in connection  to the seizure of more than 60 bales of cocaine from the water off Dunlough Bay, Mizen Head, Bantry on July 2, 2007. It’s understood that the drugs were valued at more than E100 million.

Mr Daly, Mr Wharrie and Mr Wanden pleaded not guilty to three separate counts of possessing cocaine,  possessing cocaine for sale or supply and possessing more than €13,000 worth of cocaine for sale or supply at Dunlough Bay, Mizen Head on July 2, 2007.

After the court heard their pleas, a jury of nine men and three women was sworn in to take charge of the trial. Judge Sean O’ Donnabhain, who is presiding over the case,  told the jury that the case could take last up to ten weeks.

Over the coming weeks, the court will hear arguments from the counsel for the prosecution and defence and its understood that in the region of 400 witnesses are on stand by to give evidence at the trial on behalf of the state.
