The Government have pledged to make €273,000 available to a number of regions in West Cork to ensure that drinking water there is of the very highest quality.

Fourteen different schemes throughout West Cork will benefit from the government-funded improvement works which include the upgrading of disinfection facilities, the installation of chlorine and turbidity monitors and alarms or dial out alarms to warn of treatment plant malfunctions.

The improvements will see Clonakilty PWSS install turbidity meters, pH and temperature meters and sampling pumps at a cost of €22,500. Castletownbere New Scheme will receive the same amount for the installation of turbidity metres, CI residual monitor and pH/ Temp/ DO meters. Similar works will be carried out at Schull, Kealkill and Drimoleague with funding of €33,750, €28,500 and €35,250 provided respectively.

Leap will receive €17,250 for the installation of turbidity meters and pH/ Temp/ DO meters, while Snave will receive €10,400, Dromore Public €22,500 and Adrigole €17,250 for the same works. Bantry Old and Ballineen will have the same protections put in place and will also install CI residual monitors. They will receive €22,500 and €17,250 respectively. Tarelton and Coopeen Number 1 will receive €5,250 and €9,000 to have CI residual monitors and pH/ temp meters installed, while finally Castletownkinnagh will receive €9,000 for the installation of a CI residual monitor.

Fianna Fáil TD Christy O'Sullivan welcomed the move saying, "It is vitally important that people throughout West Cork continue to enjoy clean, healthy water," said Deputy O'Sullivan. "We often take our drinking water for granted but at the same time it has such a profound effect on our lives. If there was a problem with it we would all be greatly affected.

"That is why this funding is so important. We have to ensure that our drinking water is of a very high standard and that it is clean and safe. This funding will provide for additional facilities that protect the water supply and will alert us if any problems should arise. I hope these new facilities will now be put in place as soon as possible and the Government will continue to provide additional funding to ensure that our water supply is protected," Deputy O'Sullivan concluded.
