Whips from across all political parties were expected to meet last night (Wednesday, April 23) to consider the introduction of a code of conduct governing reference letters written by TDs and Senators. The move follows the controversy surrounding a reference letter written by Labour TD Kathleen Lynch on behalf of the parents of Trevor Casey (31) from Fairhill who was sentenced to 13 years in prison last Friday. Deputy Lynch's letter created huge controversy in Cork and fuelled a barrage of criticism from members of the public who condemned the move on local radio. The Cork North Central Dáil deputy has apologised for writing the letter and has said she accepts it was not appropriate. Last night's meeting came after the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley proposed that guidelines were drawn up for politicians. |
