Most deaths on Britain’s roads are caused by driver error, according to the official Department for Transport analysis of 2006 road traffic accident casualties.
Simple mistakes while at the wheel were responsible for far more fatal crashes than deliberate breaches of traffic laws, such as speeding or ignoring a red traffic light.
Travelling too fast for the conditions, but within the speed limit, was cited as a factor in 18% of reports. Exceeding the speed limit was a factor in 14% of deaths, up from 12% 12 months earlier. The data also showed that more than one in ten crashes last year involved a hit-and-run driver. |
