Obviously there will be some doubters when it comes to this plan, but lets be honest, what have we got to lose? The language? That died on its arse years ago so lets just bite the bullet on this one and stop paying people grants for pretending to speak it. The money we save can be spent on new roads.

In fact there's not much uniquely Irish left to protect. Our beautiful landscape is much better protected form the blight of indiscriminate housing in the North than it is down here, so bringing back the Brits could actually be the last hope of saving the Irish countryside from death by a thousand bungalows and could even save the Hill of Tara.

Along with our newspapers we increasingly favour UK TV to our own so why nor just ditch RTE altogether? We could build a light rail network in Cork with the money we save. As for radio the BBC could simply extend Radio Foyle to cover the whole island.

Irish music? That's just for tourists. We want British rock and pop or Irish imitations of it, so no loss there either. When it comes to food we'd lose our tripe and drisheen and get proper curry instead, I say lets do it as soon as possible.

Maybe the only downside would be using sterling as our currency, but we could have our own version like the Scots do with Irish pictures on the notes, that's more than we ever got from Brussels with the euro. Perhaps the biggest benefit of all though, would be that planning and building our roads and railways would no longer be the job of Irish politicians and civil servants. The British Government would surely deliver a metro in Dublin for less than E6 billion for example.

The local and European elections are coming up next year so now's our chance. We should form a new political party that fights for liberty, justice and a new union. We could call it Libertas.
