Once the motorways to Dublin are finished the emphasis will switch to rail projects in Dublin.
This scheme should of course be linking Galway to Cork via Limerick, but because there is no political appetite for what would be the single biggest step towards real balanced regional development in Ireland, it will probably never happen. It’s not just Cork that’s getting shafted though. Spare a thought for Galway which probably has the worst traffic in the country. Earlier this year Noel Dempsey announced the motorway from Ennis to Galway would begin construction this year. It won’t. In fact the only major project in Galway that will definitely be finished when proposed is the motorway from guess where? Dublin. That’s right, funnelling even more traffic, faster into the city’s streets that already can’t cope. It’s pure genius I tell you but you must admit, the adverts on the telly are great.
