Peugeot has unveiled a new compact people carrier called the Peugeot 5008. The car will be available in both five and seven seat versions. The 5008 will receive its world premiere at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show and will go on sale in Ireland at the beginning of 2010. Prices and specifications will be announced closer to the Irish launch time.

This new model shares the famous "5" series name with the legendary Peugeot 504 and the Peugeot 505 Family estate. In its day, the Peugeot 505 Family Estate was the benchmark seven-seat family car. Peugeot aims to repeat this performance with the new 5008.

Peugeot claims that the 5008 will accommodate up to seven occupants and their luggage. The driver has a raised driving position good visibility, combined with ergonomically positioned controls, mirrored in the new 3008. With its large front windscreen and glass roof, passengers will enjoy a bright and spacious interior with panoramic views of the outside. Total glazed surface area is 5.77m².

Peugeot believes that flexibility is a key strength of the 5008. It has a flat-folding rear seat arrangement to maximise the load area. The front passenger seat can be folded flat into a shelf configuration to load long objects right up to the fascia panel.

Passengers can easily access the third row seats from the second row. With one easy movement, the seat cushion lifts and the seat back moves forward, freeing up maximum space to allow entry to the third row, where two full size seats also fold individually into the floor.

Peugeot believes that the new 5008 will set new standards in the MPV segment for safety but the car has yet to receive a Euro NCAP rating. The safety equipment includes ESP, six air bags, automatic electric parking brake with hill assist function, fasten seat belt warnings on all seats and tyre under-inflation detection. Head / curtain air bags to protect all three rows of seats, is available on seven seat versions.

Peugeot has worked to provide 5008 customers with road holding comparable to that of a saloon car. The car has been designed for comfort and convenience.

The options include front and rear parking assistance, as well as a new system to measure parking space. Two sensors located on the sides of the bumpers provide a visual indication on the multifunction display and offering the suggested parking manoeuvre. A Head-Up Display, to be launched first on the 3008, provides the driver with essential driving information (speed, cruise control/speed limiter and distance alert) via a translucent panel which extends from the top of the instrument panel. Distance Alert comprises a radar located behind the lower front bumper panel which measures the distance between the vehicle in front and transmits this data as a measurement of time in seconds, to the head-up display. Snow Motion adds a further function to the traditional traction control system, allowing the driver to make effective progress on icy or snow-covered roads.

To make long journeys more enjoyable, the Peugeot 5008 has a multimedia system integrated into the passenger compartment. This consists of two 7'' colour screens located in the back of the front seat head restraints, each screen can run independent of the other.

At launch the 5008 will be available with six engine options, including a 1.6 HDi 6-speed electronically controlled gearbox emitting only 135g/km CO2 and a 1.6 HDi FAP 110bhp 6-speed manual emitting 143g/km CO2.
