Nobody ever thinks the worst will happen to them, but what if it does?

The possibility of breaking down in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere, believe or not could happen to anyone.

Okay, so maybe you won’t break down on the top of a mountain or in the middle of the desert but even those of you who only drive to the shops and back should be prepared for any eventuality.

No matter how well you care for your car, a stray nail, a lose cow or an out-of-control motorist can easily leave you stranded.

However you end up there, if you do end up at the side of the road you need to be prepared, and the way to do it is to keep a kit on your car of essential items in case of emergency.

Whether you put together your own kit or buy one, you need to have some essentials inside.

You can buy ready prepared kits from many supermarkets and motor factors. Typically they include, first aid supplies, tools to get you back on the road, tools to keep you safe while you wait for help, and a few things that could just be used to pass the time.

You may also have special personal needs that you need to be prepared for. If you’re diabetic for instance, you may want to keep some glucose tablets in the car too, just in case.

If you want to put together your own kit there are a number of items you should include such as jump leads, a tow rope, a tyre repair kit, a traffic cone or warning triangle, a torch, spare batteries, gloves, an emergency blanket, a rain jacket, tie wraps, wipes, a cloth and a first aid kit.

The first aid kit itself should include cotton wool, various sizes of plasters, bandages, antiseptic fluid and wipes, gauze, a small scissors and rubber gloves.

It’s also a good idea to have some emergency food and water on hand if you are going on a long journey. It’s also prudent to bring some painkillers like nurofen or paracetamol.
