Enda the line...

Thursday, 18th May, 2017 1:01am

And they’re off! Cork woke up this morning wondering if one of its own TDs will be the next leader of Fine Gael and possibly, Taoiseach.

As of midnight last night, Enda Kenny has retired as leader of the Fine Gael Party. He will continue to carry out duties as party leader in an acting capacity until his successor is elected throughout the Fine Gael Leadership election process.

He has asked that the Fine Gael Executive Council expedite this process and to have it concluded by close of business on Friday 2 June.

The front-runners to take over are Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar.

Last year, Mr Kenny indicated that he would not lead the party into the next general election and decided to implement that decision yesterday.

He said: “I would like to stress the huge honour and privilege that it has been for me to lead our party for the past 15 years, in opposition and into Government on two successive occasions. I thank all our members, past and present.”
