New Lord Mayor for Cork

Thursday, 15th June, 2017 9:33am

The Lord Mayor of Cork will tomorrow hand the chain over to his successor.

Fine Gael Cllr Des Cahill has spent the past year as the Lord Mayor of Cork and on Friday, Fianna Fáil Cllr Tony Fitzgerald will take over the reins.

Cllr Cahill chaired his last Cork City Council meeting as a lord mayor on Monday, which could go down as a historic day for Cork city as members accepted a report recommending that the city’s boundary be extended.

Previous to the meeting, he said: “Tomorrow evening I will chair the Ordinary Meeting of Cork City Council for the final time as Lord Mayor. Following the publication on Friday of the Report of the Expert Advisory Group on Local Government Arrangements in Cork, at Monday’s meeting it will be my great privilege as Lord Mayor to propose that Cork City Council approves the Report.”

During his time as Lord Mayor Cllr Cahill gave the Freedom of the City to Ronan O’Gara.
