Other options available to students

Wednesday, 16th August, 2017 6:08pm

As students received their Leaving Cert results yesterday, one principal is advising those deciding their next step not to stress about their results.

Helen Ryan, principal of the Cork College of Commerce, said: “There’s always the pressure students put on themselves, and the media. I do think there’s a growing awareness that there are other options than higher education. It’s not all about the Leaving Cert anymore.”

She advised anyone who was disappointed with their results to take time, look at their other options and resist comparing themselves to their peers.

“It’s just important that everybody looks at their own journey. If you had a goal and you met it, you should be happy. It’s not always about getting the highest points; if you did something to get to the next rung of the ladder, you should be proud,” Ms Ryan said.

She said both the college’s students and faculty were pleased with the Leaving Cert results and that the new point system will take some adjusting.

“It’s different and it’s going take a bit of getting used to, so we’re being a bit tentative. It’s a new system and any new thing takes time to embed.”
