Plaza revamp for Shandon

Thursday, 14th September, 2017 8:45am

The Shandon area has received a boost with the announced redevelopment of the plaza by Cork City Council.

The plaza, adjacent to the Firkin Crane Theatre, and known as O’Connell Square, will be upgraded before the end of the year, it is planned.

The revamp will include street furniture and reinvestment in blockwork and the public realm structure.

The news was welcomed by Cllr Kenneth O’Flynn who said: “This is an encouraging step forward for Shandon. I wish to commend the Shandon Renewal Area Association for their tremendous work in clean ups and their persistence and dedication to the Shandon area.”

Cllr O’Flynn also praised the positive feedback from the success of the Shandon Festival and voiced his hope that a “suitable arrangement” would also be found for the Butter Exchange building in Shandon.
