Cork TD condemns ‘fanatic’ vandals

Wednesday, 6th June, 2018 3:47pm

Cork TD Mick Barry has criticised vandals who left anti-abortion graffiti on his constituency office last weekend.

The Solidarity TD’s office in Cork city was vandalised last Friday, with the words ‘murder’, ‘baby killer’ and ‘blood money’ painted on the door and windows.

Deputy Barry, who campaigned for a Yes vote in the recent referendum on the Eighth Amendment, said he was sure campaigners on both sides of the debate would be condemning of the vandalism:

“I have been a campaigner for abortion rights for more than 35 years now, so a bit of spray paint on the front of my constituency office is hardly going to deter me,” the Cork North-Central TD commented.

“Spraying paint on the front of my office isn’t going to change the referendum result and isn’t going to change the minds of people who voted for Repeal.

“All it will do is unite the overwhelming majority of ordinary people – Yes and No voters alike - in opposition to the actions of a handful of fanatics.”

Deputy Barry also paid tribute to the Earth Café in the city centre, whose referendum mural was also vandalised recently.

“I understand that the mural at the Earth Cafe was also vandalised, and I’d like to express support and solidarity to the owners and staff there as well,” he finished.
