Tuesday, 12th June, 2018 2:06pm

Three Cork transplant recipients will head to Italy this week to take part in the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships.

Charlie Ryan from Cobh and Michael Keohane from Rosscarbery, both liver transplant recipients, along with Patrick O'Sullivan from Mallow, a kidney transplant recipient, are members of Transplant Team Ireland. The team will travel to Sardinia this Saturday for the tenth European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships, which take place from 17-24 June.

The Championships are open to all kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas and bone marrow transplant recipients, as well as dialysis patients. They showcase the value of sport and regular physical activity for people who have gone through or are currently going through such situations. Team Ireland includes five liver transplant recipients, 16 kidney transplant recipients and three dialysis patients.

The Irish Team has enjoyed success at other European Championships over the past number of years, winning 21 gold, 19 silver and 29 bronze at the last Championships in Finland in 2016 to finish in fifth position.

Organ Donor Cards can also be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association on 01 6205306 or by free texting the word DONOR to 50050.
