Ducking in at the quack of dawn

Wednesday, 4th July, 2018 4:45pm

Some feathered friends waddled in for breakfast into the Metropole Hotel at the weekend.

Although they were too early for Sunday brunch, the mother duck and her seven ducklings were on time for an early breakfast having shuffled their way in at 6am.

The Cork Independent can confirm that there was no fowl play by the chefs and none of the ducks ended up on the menu that evening. Phew!

General Manager of the hotel Roger Russell told the newspaper: “They walked in the front door. The night team had opened up the front doors to air the lobby and the breakfast team had arrived. The breakfast chef was getting ready.

“The breakfast staff heard a commotion in the corner and there were the ducks. They had come in through the front and made their way down to the breakfast room.”

The chef went over to them and picked up the mother duck who gave it to the night porter. The waiting staff then lured her ducklings into a box with breadcrumbs and they carried the family down to the river. “The mother duck jumped off the quays

into the river and the ducklings followed her in and they all swam away,” said Mr Russell who confirmed this is the first time the hotel has had ducks to stay but from time to

time it get the odd dog rambling in and birds swooping in to have a look at the hotel!
