Murphy to tee off in Finland

Wednesday, 18th July, 2018 5:12pm

John Murphy of Kinsale has been named on the Great Britain and Ireland team for the 2018 St Andrews Trophy, to take place later this month in Linna, Finland.

The 20-year-old made his breakthrough on the amateur golfing stage last month when he won the St Andrews Links Trophy in Scotland.

He will join 22-year-old Robin Dawson of Tramore and 21-year-old Conor Purcell of Portmarnock to make up a trio of Irish players on the nine-man GB&I team.

Posting on Twitter on Monday, Mr Murphy said he was honored to be chosen for the event: “Can’t wait to get over to Finland next week for it,” he said.

Captain Craig Watson from Scotland will lead the team in competition against the Continent of Europe team from 26-27 July.

Mr. Murphy was also a quarter finalist at The Amateur Championship, while Mr Purcell was a semifinalist.

Mr Dawson was a runner-up and has risen to a tenth place world amateur ranking this season.

England’s Matthew Jordan, who played for GB&I in the 2017 Walker Cup at Los Angeles Country Club and who captured the Lytham Trophy with a nine-shot victory in May, is the highest ranked member of the team at number five in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
