Post office closures imminent in Cork

Thursday, 9th August, 2018 9:11am

Cork is included on a list of counties where post offices are set to close in the next week or so, the Cork Independent has learned.

12 post offices across the country are set to close imminently with a spokesperson for An Post confirming to the Cork Independent that this list includes Cork post offices.

The news follows on from last Friday when An Post announced that 161 postmasters have applied for the company’s voluntary retirement package. Of this 161, 12 have asked to retire in the next week or two.

It confirmed that as part of its Post Office Transformation Programme and €50m investment in the Post Office network, 161 postmasters have applied for the company’s voluntary retirement package, resulting from the recent ground-breaking agreement with the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU).

This will likely result in the closure of 161 post offices out of a network of 1,111 post offices. The remaining network of 950 post offices is the largest retail network in Ireland.

The list of post offices closing will be issued at the end of August once the details have been confirmed with each postmaster.

The spokesperson for An Post also said that a full list of 161 post offices will be made available at the end of the month.

They added: “We need to confirm details with the postmasters in relation to their personal contracts and their desired date of retirement up to end Jan 2019. Most importantly we have to ensure the transfer to their customer transactions to a neighbouring office.

“This is really vital in order to help boost the business of other small local post offices and help sustain their future.”

The spokesperson added: “This extra business, added to the new products and services we have coming on stream, will bring in more customers and help ensure the future viability of that local post office. We have pledged to have a post office in every community of 500+ people and that all rural customers will be within 15km of at least one post office, and most likely several.”
