Wednesday, 5th September, 2018 4:44pm

One of Cork’s top ranking gardaí has welcomed the new garda commissioner.

Drew Harris took up the position at one minute past midnight on Monday at a small ceremony in Dublin where he said he wanted to make An Garda Síochána more transparent.

He takes over from acting garda commissioner Donall O’Cualain.

His attestation was welcomed by Chief Superintendent Barry McPolin from Anglesea Street Garda Station.

He told the Cork Independent: "I would like to welcome Commissioner Harris to An Garda Síochána and look forward to his visit to the south of the country in the near future.

“We are behind Commissioner Harris 100 per cent and are here to support him, and work with him to deliver on our ultimate goal of making Ireland a safe place to work, live and visit.

“I would also like to congratulate Deputy Commissioner Donall O'Cualain on his 35 years of service in An Garda Síochána and wish him and his family well in his retirement,” he concluded.
