Wednesday, 6th February, 2019 4:54pm

A group aiming to reduce pollution in Cork waters has launched a youth programme encouraging children to promote cleaner shores.

Cork Harbour Waterkeeper launched its Junior Water Guardian Programme this week in Blackpool Youth Club, aiming to encourage people to fight against pollution in Cork Harbour.

“The programme is geared toward schools, youth clubs and scout troops,” said Noel Sheehan, Executive Director of Cork Harbour Waterkeeper. “The goal is to educate the younger generation about the pollution in Cork Harbour and surrounding areas, with the hope of getting them involved in various projects like beach clean-ups, water sampling and recreational activities.”

Cork Harbour Waterkeeper is a member of the global organisation Waterkeeper Alliance, presided over by Robert F Kennedy Jr Cork Harbour Waterkeeper launched last April to bring attention to pollution locally and hold polluters accountable for their actions.

Last August saw the group start to use the Swim Guide app, a free global app which allows users to check the water quality at their local beach areas, in Cork, becoming the first user of the app in Ireland and Europe.
