‘GODLESS’ SCHOOLS An outfit called ‘Educate Together’ has applied to the Department of Education for permission to open a number of primary schools in the Cork area. The organisers pride themselves on providing a multi-denominational education. They don’t teach any particular faith or creed, preferring to let parents organise religious instruction for their children outside of school hours. The group has targeted Carrigaline, Rochestown and Midleton, as well as seventeen other areas in the country. Changing times, indeed. One wonders what the bishops will say. RUGGER BUGGERS The bags the Irish rugby team made of the World Cup with their dismal performances made us cringe. As did the sight of the lads sputtering the ‘Ireland’s Call’ thing, marching behind a mockya flag and being ashamed to sing our own ‘Soldiers Song’. What a contrast to the tears flowing down the Argies’ faces as they lustily belted out their National Anthem. It may yet have a bearing on Cork Con selling their grounds in Ballintemple to property speculator Owen O’Callaghan. Who now gives a hoot about the unionist orientated IRFU and the Hector Gussets who control it? Joe Gavin and the City Council should stick to their guns and continue with their stance of rejecting approaches for the rezoning of existing sports facilities within the city.
