Councillors approve playground extensionCouncillors approved a report on a proposed extension at Douglas Community Park, at the most recent meeting of Cork County Council. The proposed development provides for the development of a playground, including playground furniture, perimeter railings, seating and associated paving, drainage and lighting. Before the development proceeds, the council is required by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to engage the services of a suitably qualified archaeologist to monitor all topsoil stripping associated with the development. Better accessibility needed at graveyardsCouncillor Danny Crowley has called on Cork County Council to make efforts to ensure that all of the cemeteries across County Cork are accessible to people with a disability. His calls follow concerns that a number of people from his own constituency have not been able to visit local graveyards . Seconding the proposal, Cllr Noel Harrington outlined how on two separate occasions he has also seen first hand how people with disabilities cannot always easily access a graveyard and described how on one occasion one women could not attend her own brother's funeral because of access issues. Responding to the councillors, Maurice Manning, Senior Executive Officer at Cork County Council outlined that the council is currently in the process of putting a plan in place to address this issue. He added that Cork County Council also proposes to conduct external accessibility audits for all its external spaces, including burial grounds, which will commence initially within the town boundaries of Mallow, Dunmanway, Ballingeary and Carrigaline. "Tenders seeking suitable consultants to carry out such audits in these four pilot towns are currently being examined and once completed, it's proposed to carry out further audits in other areas," he said. |
