The Euro has strengthened against the dollar and sterling, yet our prices have not come down accordingly, nor will they either. People are taxed to the hilt in this country, commercially and individually to the point of draining all patriotism from consumers who're now shopping with their feet and heading overseas for bargains. Even when you take in the cost of flying to the likes of New York or London and paying for a hotel, it still works out a cheaper option and with a holiday thrown in, can you blame anyone for going that route? Street drinkingIs it the sunshine or the mildness of the weather or what? but I've seen an enormous increase in the amount of street drinking in the city. There isn't a day goes by that I don't come across some group of down and out's, homeless or just plain troublemakers drinking on bridges, parks, street benches or falling around the roads between traffic. The proliferation in off licence's and cheap drink makes it all the more easy now to take to the streets and with the fact that Simon is full all the time their surplus spills out onto the streets. In fact I would think that some of the characters I've come across wouldn't be left into a homeless shelter. I was reminded of how bad it's got in Cork recently because Dublin is just about to pass a street drinking bye-law imposing an on the spot €75 fine. It increases to €1900 if the culprit refuses to pay up. Could you imagine trying to fine the street drinking characters of Cork? We've had the bye-law here for a good few years now, but it's just not being imposed, meanwhile our streets are littered with drinkers and drink alike. Rough ould city when the sun shines. The guards should get tough on anyone boozing on the street, regardless of their circumstances. Its pointless investing millions on the city landscape when this kind of carry-on is being encouraged. |
