All we seem to be reliving these days is 1988 when joxer went to Stuttgart and Houghton put the ball in the English net which saw Ireland beat the old foe. Our own world cup final win if you like. Its wearing a bit thin now 20 years later. Maybe Trappatoni will be our saviour. I miss the days of Irish soccer glory short and all as it was. To be truthful I figure it stretched only a short three years , 1988 – 1990 inc, then it was all downhill after that. Its been a long time in decent hasn't it?. I was in Italy for the 2006 World cup, which Italy went on to win, the atmosphere was like Ireland during Italia 90. The nation went beserk after the final win, every city town and village celebrated in true Italian style. Perhaps we'll have those days back again, maybe 2010? The taste of Cork food festival happens next weekend at the old city jail and I've had a headstart on most cos I know what to expect. I'm just back from the Taste of Dublin on over last weekend. I think the Cork fair needs supporting because I believe it to be in a very fragile predicament. Dublin is a roaring succcess, people have no problem paying the €25 euro to get in, then €7 per tiny dish of tasting food, €5 for a bottle of beer, €7 for wine or champagne. Its fair to say that its not hard to race thru the cash, or florins as is the case at "Taste". Dublin has the populationa and indeed the temperament to pay those kind of prices, I sincerley hope Cork has as well. To that end I would ask us all to get behind the event, the city needs these kinds of glitzy festivals, in a spectacular location. Speaking of which it was gas in Taste of Dublin watching people que for portions of fish n chips, indian prawns, tiny portions of pork belly, a lamb chop, mini hamburgers and not a soul at Gordon Ramseys Powerscourt restaurant stand, might have had something to do with the fact that they were dishing up Oysters and chocolate sauce. The man has lost the run of himself. It renewed my faith in mankind. |
