He has not impressed some of his colleagues. At the recent get together in Salthill apparently one indignant TD claimed that Varadkar called him a "communist" and that it was "communists" like me Charlie Flanagan and Alan Shatter who were to blame for FG's disaster in 2002. He dismissed Varadkar as "a jumped up county councillor."

It will be interesting to see what the political future holds for him. Michael Collins, the former Fianna Fail TD for Limerick West has far more immediate and pressing concerns. His political career is certainly over but what the future holds for him is a bit uncertain just now. His next Christmas dinner could be by courtesy of some prison governor. He was found guilty of obtaining a tax clearance certificate by falsely claiming to be tax compliant. He faces a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.

Tom Gilmartin need have no concerns about ending up in jail. Apparently he can say anything he likes before the Mahon Tribunal without any fear of the consequences and some of things he has had to say seem totally outlandish. Owen O'Callaghan, who has been his principal victim didn't hold back when he classed him "Tom Gilmartin is a bitter, failed businessman. He is a fantasist and malevolent liar and is far from being the victim which he has portrayed himself." He has, said Mr. O'Callaghan "a deal that will strike many as sordid" with the Tribunal granting him immunity from prosecution over his evidence. There are many who would agree with that last statement. Surely it gives him the licence to name and attempt to shame anybody with whom he may have a grievance!
