The joy of summer

I am torn between complaining about the rain and being thankful for our recent stretch of glorious Sunshine! A friend of mine texted this morning how she is trying desperately to come to terms with 40 degree heat in Turkey so I suppose we should be grateful. Just across the Irish Sea they are basking in a heat wave with warnings from the British met office to wear sunscreen and have bottled water nearby at all times!

Wimbledon looks glorious as they quaff pimms, and devour strawberries and cream by the bucketful. It's 21 years since I was last there, having been lucky enough in the eighties to have covered the fortnight for both Irish and Canadian radio.

Two weeks of paid indulgence, not once but twice. The second time I was there the final was held off till the Monday due to rain and I missed it, having to fly back to Canada.

No fear of that anymore as they now have the roof to block out the rain. Wouldn’t you know they get to use for the first time when Murray was playing. It’s gas to watch the English as they make Andy Murray out to be a God like figure, just like they did with Tim Henman in his day.

How any sport star could perform under such pressure is beyond me, and I hear Murray isn't all the fond of the English and prefers to be called Scottish as opposed to British!

Hard cases how they claim everyone for their own when winning and I suppose if Murray crashes out of the tennis he will be known as "Scottish tennis player, Andy Murray". You have got to hand it to the gents though they are as quiet as church mice by comparison to the women on court. One or two of them are three or four decibels short of a jet airliner taking off. I don't remember it being like that years ago, in fact I think it came in from Russia to intimidate the opposition; all it does is drive the spectators insane.

It just took one lady to start grunting and it's now blossomed into an Olympic sport. If they were handing out gold medals then Sharapova and the Williams sisters are there in the front row!

A beautiful day
