As the winter's chill fades and we approach a new season, we are reminded of the beauty of nature and new beginnings. It was always perceived to be an old tradition to 'bring the Spring' into our homes on the first of February, by bringing daffodils, tulips or hyacinths into the house. We, here at St Luke's Home encourage that you remember your older loved ones this Spring and put the Spring back into their step with a little generosity and attention.

The little things can mean so much to our older generation. We often take for granted how a simple gesture can mean a great deal to an older loved one. We encourage all of you to do your bit for anyone you know aged 65 and over. A simple spontaneous token of good-will can be as memorable to an older loved one as any gift. Here are few easy suggestions:

  • A cup of tea with the morning newspaper;
  • Giving a little bunch of daffodils or tulips that may be growing wild;
  • Put a sprinkle of bird seed or bird food on the trees outside an older person's window. This has been known to keep an older person's mind active;
  • Buying flower seeds or bulbs in which they can plant a window box outside their window;
  • Chocolates were always thought to be a cliche. However, they are still a lovely treat. A few rich liquor chocolates can release endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are known as the happy hormone;
  • Bring your older loved ones to visit a grandchild they may have not seen in a while;
  • A visit to see a pal in hospital or a retirement home;
  • A picnic lunch by the seafront can have so many positive effects. The Fresh air, the exercise and the excitement of doing something different can give spirit to our older generation;
  • A visit to the local bookshop, library or museum;
  • Planting a tree outside their house or on the grounds of the retirement home. The surge in growth has been known to remind those aged 65 and over of life's wonderfulness.

Courtesy and respect can also go a long way when it comes to keeping our older generation looked after and content. There are many methods of showing a little kindness this Spring without going out of one's way!

  • Giving your seat up on a bus, train, at mass or in the park;
  • Opening a door or giving a table up at a restaurant for an older couple would really show chivalry and it may also impress the company you are in;
  • Letting an older person ahead of you in a queue or bringing their shopping-trolley back to the shop;
  • Repairing something in the home or collecting the mail from the end of the road;
  • Providing a lift to Bingo, Choir or Church. For many who may have found it difficult to attend, this is a huge gesture.

It is a sophistication to appreciate mature wine, buy antique furniture and art. So why is it that we have forgotten how to show appreciation, respect, courtesy, compassion or even a little love to our older loved ones!
