Since being elected to this position last year, Cllr Counihan has enjoyed an exciting year in office which he admits has been much busier than he had ever imagined it could be. This, he attributes to the wide community interest in the office of Lord Mayor and the vast volume of functions which the Lord Mayor is invited to attend.
While Cllr Counihan doesn’t deny that the whole experience has been incredibly tiring, he describes it as “a pleasant kind of tiredness” and says that there are few greater priviledges than to hold the title of Lord Mayor and he feels deeply honoured to today be the Lord Mayor of Cork. When not wearing his famous chains, the Lord Mayor can be found spending time with his wife Breda or talking with their three children Niamh, Gillian and Kieran. As like any true Cork man, GAA also plays an important role in Cllr Counihan’s life and he has also shown his allegiance to Cork with his continued support of the Cork hurling team.
Still whether it is with his family, with the team supporters or with his constituents, the one thing that remains the same is the subject; Cork, and this, like the Lord Mayor’s close relationship with the city, is something which has and will continue to remain at the top of Cllr Counihan’s priorities for many, many years to come. |
