I get home at four and usually join my sister, who gets in around the same time, for a good hot dinner. This is the time that we exchange news and have a chat. Its takes time for me to make conversation, as I must spell each word. My family are very quick to pick up what I am saying. Talking to folk outside the family is difficult as they are unsure how to treat me; I sometimes find that people spell away without taking the time to notice what I am saying.
Through the I.W.A (Irish Wheelchair Ass.) I have been granted ten Personal Assistant hours a week. This is an invaluable service to have because it allows the user independence and the carer much needed free time. In March I went to blood brother with my P.A., it was great. We go to the cinema, parties and out for meals. I have two Personal Assistants but there are people much less fortunate than I who do not have access to these supports . An injection of extra money from the Government is badly needed to expand the service further.
