The houses in Mulla Vale are being constructed under the House of Tomorrow Scheme run by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI ).

Houses built under this scheme have to provide at least a 40% reduction in the amount of energy required to heat the houses relative to the existing 2002 Building Regulations. To achieve this reduction there are a number of different systems included in the houses. These include:

Solar Water Heating

Each house has solar water heating panels on the roof which can provide up to 60% of domestic hot water requirements for the year.

A solar water heater produces hot water by transforming sunlight into heat through its solar panels. It not only converts direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight into heat, so it works even when the sky is overcast (as let's face it, Ireland's charm does not lie in it's year-round roasting sunshine!).

There is less solar heat available in the winter so a back up heater will boost the water temperature. The heat is then stored in a large hot water cylinder. The result is plenty of hot water at a fraction of the cost.
