From a position where they had a seemingly unassailable lead, Newtownshandrum took their foot off the pedal to almost disastrous consequences in the Munster Club Senior Hurling Championship Final at Thurles on Sunday.

Every now and then there are occasions that demonstrate unequivocally that the circumstances abounding at a particular time should be simply accepted and then utilised to their best advantage. Cork City FC have appointed well-known GAA figure Liam Meaney as its new general manager. The new role will encompass supervision of the day-to-day running of the club, along with implementing plans and structures for the club's future, it also sees Mr Meaney take on the role of Club Licensing Officer.

 
Cork crew involved in collision during Clipper Race

There was a dramatic start to Race 4 of Clipper Round the World Race in Cape Town on Monday when the Cork yacht was involved in a collision as it departed to Geraldton in Western Australia. However, the Cork boat was not as severely damaged as the English yacht it collided with, Hull & Humber.

Fermoy progress but Valley's denied

In the Munster Junior Hurling Club Championship quarter-final, Fermoy were made to battle all the way for their 1-12 to 1-8 victory over Kilgarvan in Kilgarvan on Sunday. Kerry champions Kilgarvan dominated the opening the quarter to lead by 1-4 to 0-2. However, Fermoy scored six unanswered points to go into the break on level terms, 0-8 to 1-5, and they made sure of victory when Paudie Shanahan netted 10 minutes from the end.
