AOS Security Glanmire 57 Claire Rockall was named 'MVP' after a fine display including a points tally of 17 points. A tight opening quarter saw Cathy Kavanagh converting from the free throw line for the Wildcats before a three from Christine O'Gorman maintained the momentum for the Waterford side. Glanmire took their time to settle but soon found their rhythm with good play from Valerie O'Driscoll and a three from Clodagh Scannell, ensuring the Cork outfit trailed by just a solitary point at the end of the first quarter. O'Driscoll continued to impress for Glanmire with a basket in the early stages of the second quarter, while Claire Rockall followed it up with a determined drive to the hoop. The pendulum had swung in Glanmire's favour and they now led 13-10 with Mark Scannell's charges causing a lot of problems for the Wildcats defence. Rockall was impressing, scoring in quick succession to stretch the lead to 25-17. Kavanagh provided some respite for the Wildcats with a superb rebound effort but O'Driscoll was leading the charge for Glanmire and they lead 30-21 at the interval. Wildcats were far from finished and signalled their intent with an opening score through Erica Walsh. The comeback continued with further scores from Sinead Deegan and Erica Walsh, helping to cut the deficit to just six points. O'Gorman and Cathy Kavanagh made threes from the line to put just five between the sides at the end of the third quarter (40-35) in favour of Glanmire. An exciting final quarter was opened with a jump shot from Helena Rohan before Rockall took control with seven unanswered points. With six and a half minutes remaining, Melissa Stone struck two big threes to give the Wildcats a slender one-point lead. Glanmire were proving resilient with a three from Emily O'Callaghan helping to put her side up by two. A dramatic closing saw Clodagh Scannell score on the inside and it proved enough as Glanmire went on to claim success by virtue of a 57-54 win. In the U-18 National Cup Final Glanmire made it a memorable double when they defeated Meteors 62-49 with Emily O'Callaghan the star performer with 20 points. |
