Some of the biggest names in Cork hurling history will converge on Blackrock Hurling Club on Saturday for a massive 'Hurlathon' in aid of the underage section of the club. A legends team from Blackrock, managed by Jimmy Brohan will take on the Cork legends team led by Kevin Hennessey. A who's who of hurling in Cork over the last 30 years will pick up the camáns again in what is sure to be a memorable 'Clash of the Legends'. The Cork legends team has attracted such illustrious names as Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Brian Corcoran, Ger Cunningham, Joe Deane, Diarmuid O' Sullivan, John Fenton, Pat Hartnett, Thomas Mulcahy, Teddy McCarthy, Tony O' Sullivan, Johnny Crowley, Seanie McGrath and Timmy McCarthy. The team photo is sure to be a collector's item. The Blackrock team will feature Cork and Blackrock legends Wayne Sherlock, Paddy Moylan, Tom and Jim Cashman, Fergal Ryan the Brownes, John Horgan, Eammonn O' Donoghue and Frank Cummins. Interest in the event has been so huge that organisers had to install two large screens to transmit the game live to cater for a crowd of up to 2,000 people expected on the night. All-Star defender Wayne Sherlock said he has never seen such interest in an event. "Everywhere I go people are talking about this unique game and asking me questions about it. I am really looking forward to the event and to the main game." Tom Cashman one of the organising committee added: "I has never seen such interest in the clash of legends and this was the reason the committee decided to install two large screens to cater for such a large crowd expected on the night." The clash of the legends is the highlight of the day long 'Hurlathon' that will cater for players from as young as three-years-of-age in a drive to promote hurling in the area. The camogie club, bowls club, bingo club and bridge club and even the local gardaí will play during the course of the day. The hurlathon will be officially opened by Lord Mayor Cllr Dara Murphy at 10am in what is sure to be am action packed day for all. Entry will be free on the evening and all are welcome to celebrate these legends of Blackrock and Cork Hurling. |
