Partnering O’Connell in the second-row is likely to be the up-and-coming star Donncha Ryan. Ryan has been in inspired form over the last twelve months and he now offers genuine competition both in the second-row and also the back-row. Blessed with natural footballing skills and a rare turn of pace, Ryan’s prominence within Munster is sure to grow over the coming seasons. Out-wide the visitors are still waiting to see the very best of new signing Doug Howlett. Impressive performances against Clermont Auvergne and Wasps in his opening two games last January, were more notable for his aggressive defence rather than his scything attack. It’s only a matter of time before New Zealand’s all-time record try-scorer opens up and his team-mates will be hoping that this Saturday’s game in Cardiff is a significant turning point. As already mentioned, victory at the Arms Park is essential for Munster’s Magners League hopes. However it will also give the squad some added confidence ahead of a crucial six weeks. With eight of the first-team players absent through international duty, Declan Kidney’s side are likely to struggle against a Cardiff side who have been near flawless at home all season. |
