The half-back battle promises to be another exciting encounter. Stephen Jones has been recalled at out-half for the visitors and he will look to forge a new partnership with Mike Philips, who is preferred at scrum-half. Jones has had a season to forget as injury, coupled with the dreadful form of Llanelli, has given the number ten grave reasons for concern. Saturday’s clash with old rival Ronan O’Gara offers the Welsh playmaker the perfect opportunity to address these issues. Experience and a cool head will be crucial for dealing with the atmosphere at Croke Park and Jones has these characteristics in abundance.
A searing turn of pace and limitless aggression would be two of his more notable traits. However the craft and guile of Reddan could well see the Irish scrum-half get the upper hand. This pivotal mini-battle between the half-backs and respective number eights will prove the difference come the final whistle. With Wales still on course for that second Grand Slam in four years, it would be hard to bet against an away victory. However, Ireland’s recent return to form, coupled with the added benefit of home advantage should be enough to see Eddie O’Sullivan’s side gain a vital victory and maintain their own hopes for a Six Nations title and Triple Crown. |
