I of course, in my usual magnanimous manner will not take any criticism in a personal way. I understand that it is just your unique and enquiring manner that seeks to question my proposal. However, it is my belief that an open and untroubled mind, especially when it is enters a stressful and demanding occasion, can encompass and overcome great obstacles.

If the talent and physical conditioning are in place, the organisation and planning in good order and the individual and collective thoughts galvanised, the time is ripe for success. But, all the top performers have these important things in place, otherwise they would not be at the top. So what is it that creates the best of the best?

In Euro 2008 the best from Europe are competing to be the Champion. All are talented and ambitious, but some will wait for inspiration to arrive. The winners will however create the arrival. To take control of ones destiny in a time of enormous challenge it is essential to discard fear and doubt. This means that the pressure on the performers is channelled into a positive by accepting and embracing the challenge and stepping into it rather than backing away from it.

This courageous and fearless attitude requires an understanding from all concerned that fortune favours the brave, and that fortune will not only favour them it will in fact become part of them if the belief is truly there. In a tournament condensed into a short period of time this mindset transforms tight situations into favourable situations and then into successful situations, and, at the same time, it can fool people into believing that luck has been the most decisive factor.

So while I accept that there have been times when I did seek to apportion blame when success failed to arrive, experience has been a considerate and compelling tutor. Fortune is real and attainable. It is the stepping stone between belief and success.

There is therefore no need for luck. Luck is the refuge of the unprepared, Leave luck at the end of the rainbow and create your own real pot of gold.
