Page 1 of 2 I watched three professional football games last week in Spain. One in Murcia in La Liga. The second in Torrevieja and the third in San Javier. I also found time to watch the Champions League Semi-Final's on Television and I also played a bit of ball with the grandson. What a holiday. My son-in-law remarked to my wife that he believed he had never seen anyone so obsessed with football. "He's an Everton supporter" I replied "What would he know about football"? However, he does have a point. We had a week away and I actually did watch a lot of football. During that week I also wrote three columns for various publications and swam in the rather cold Mediterranean Sea, built sandcastles and dug holes in the beach with the little man filling them in behind me and predictability, I ate lots of succulent fish. On the return journey I had a difference of opinion with the check-in attendants of the world's favourite low cost airline company. I was in congested company with this one as many people were made re-distribute or discard luggage or failing that, hand more money over to the grasping hands. I was unsure how to gauge the mentality of the staff at the airport. Were they simply doing their job and having to unfairly endure the frustrations of many people or were they gaining commission from the extra revenue engendered? My wife and I actually had less luggage returning than we did going, having brought some clothes out for the grandson. Now, I must admit that I had purchased an electric toothbrush, which is brilliant by the way, but I hardly feel that added two kilos to my bag. In the heel of the hunt my wife dug her heels in. At this juncture I stood back and allowed her head knowing that had I attempted to instigate any other course of action it may have cost me my own head, and refusing on principle to make any further financial contribution to this money-laden company, she ditched some items into the waste bin and all was fine. That the plane was only three quarters full only added further confusion to the bizarre episode. Still in all, the arrival home was sweetened by the fact that Cork City travelled to Inchicore last Sunday which enabled me to get another game in, and what a game it was. As I am sure you are aware by now I am the most committed advocate of Summer Football. Well, just in case I needed any reassurance or confirmation for my stance, last Sunday provided an enormous amount of conclusiveness on the merits of football in the sunshine. The pitch was excellent and the attacking attitude pertinent to both teams gave us a fun-filled evening by the banks of the river Camac. I genuinely thought City had a serious opportunity to re-ignite their season. Pat's were missing three experienced defenders and the Cork lads had them pegged back for a large part of the first half. However, the goal conceded in the opening minutes meant City were chasing the game somewhat. |
