On my way out of Dublin Airport I encountered some Chelsea supporters on their way to Moscow, with a stopover in Zurich, for The Champions League Cup Final. They had match tickets but not a hotel booking and were fore-warned to expect all sorts of shenanigans when they arrive in Russia.
I must admit I appreciate their sense of adventure. While they were not old by any means, the bloom of youth has long departed their cheeks but their hearts remain entwined with exuberance. Sport I feel, is a powerfully persuasive antidote to aging. By the time you read this piece it will all be over and hopefully all went well for them. However, there was as much trepidation as there was excitement waiting to board that flight to Switzerland A new football magazine comes on the market this week. It is called ONSIDE and is primarily focused on The eircom League. It is a brave and commendable venture and one that I sincerely hope brings success to the two young men behind the idea. I have been working on the new Monday Night Soccer Show on RTÉ and the viewing figures and the reaction of the general public have been very good. The continued improvement of The eircom League fully merits a successful TV show and a popular magazine to assist the game to reach out and entice more people to become regular supporters. Were every club to gain another couple of thousand aficionados the League would become self sufficient which would allow it to step up to the next level.
The magazine will be on sale at all eircom League clubshops and at the grounds on matchdays, and also at Easons and other stores. The quality and the presentation is very impressive and I can recommend it highly. Get yourself a copy and let the lads know what you think. |
