The exclusive Irish terrestrial rights for the UEFA Cup has been awarded to TV3. The three season TV deal, which begins as of from September 2009, sees TV3 become the exclusive terrestrial home of the UEFA Cup in Ireland in conjunction with UEFA's new centralised media rights deals from Season 2009/2010. The deal includes fifteen live and exclusive first pick matches plus exclusive terrestrial highlights and delayed rights to all other UEFA Cup matches up to and including the Final. This announcement, in addition to TV3's recent award of new Champions League rights, will see TV3 broadcast more top European club football matches per season than any other terrestrial channel in Ireland as follows, with 16 UEFA Champions League matches per season on Tuesday nights, followed by 15 UEFA Cup matches per season on Thursday nights. Commenting on the announcement Pat Kiely, TV3's Commercial Director said, "This deal catapults TV3 into a leading terrestrial sports broadcaster position from 2009. With two nights of live and exclusive football on big European club competition weeks, TV3 will be the home of European club football. "We are really looking forward to working with UEFA on the introduction of the new UEFA Cup format and building on the success and popularity of such a prestigious competition. This is also particularly good news for us coming hot on the heels of our recent success in winning Tuesday night Champions League rights and our very successful introduction of live GAA All-Ireland Championship coverage to our schedule." |
