Big win for North Pres

Thursday, 9th February, 2017 1:00am

North Pres crowned a fine season with a hard-earned win over Fermoy side Coláiste an Chraoibhin in the Cork Intermediate C Colleges Final recently.

Although the Northsiders found themselves a point down at half-time, the move of Shelley O’Donovan to midfield settled the side, before joint captain Leah Cambridge – in her finest school game to date – struck a superb individual goal.

Still, Fermoy presented dangerous opponents and Lauren Twohig, Karen Daly and Chantelle O’Donoghue needed to be in top form to deny their opponents. It says a lot for this school side that two of the team played through the pain barrier to take home the cup and it was the same pair that dealed their side’s fate in the game; Maggie Cullen discarded her crutches at half-time after a groin injury had threatened her participation, while Caryln McCarthy played despite suffering from bronchitis.

The two girls scored a goal each in the second half to ensure North Pres were winners on the day, with the cup now residing in the Farranree school.
