Tough draw as City set for Poland

Wednesday, 20th June, 2018 4:42pm

Cork City FC have a battle on their hands after drawing Legia Warsaw in the first qualifying round of the 2018/2019 Champion's League.

City will have home advantage for the first leg which is set to take place on the weekend of 10-11 July in Turner's Cross while they will head for Poland for the return leg on 17/18 July with full details yet to be finalised.

Should they emerge from this tie, City will then face Solvakia's Spartak Trnava or HŠK Zrinjski Mostar of Bosnia & Herzegovina in the second round.

Despite being underdogs against the Polish side, John Caulfield's men are guaranteed at least one more round of European action as, if they fail to overcome the challenge of Legia Warsaw, City will automatically enter the third qualifying round of the Europa League, having received a bye.

This was by virtue of a special drawing made by UEFA during proceedings at Tuesday's draw at UEFA HQ in Nyon. Legia Warsaw are familiar with Irish opponents after facing Dundalk in the 2016-2017 season and St Patrick's Athletic in the 2014/2015 season, knocking both sides out. The Poles were crowned Ekstraklasa League champions in the in five of the last six seasons and have two internationals among their side, Michał Pazdan and Artur Jdrzejczyk, who are currently with the national side for the 2018 World Cup.
