Dodge the dryness this cold season

The yo-yo-ing weather conditions can have your skin feeling a bit confused as we go from warm heating to cooler outdoors. It is, however, an excuse to invest in some comforting products and with payday being just within reach, we can surely indulge ourselves again?

It is important to always treat your skin type with your regular skincare. Look after it with regular use of good products that fit your budget.

One of the most time efficient ways to treat your skin is with an overnight mask.

There is no rinsing and no messing about. A thin layer which is applied and left like a night cream is the simplest thing.

Let’s start with budget pharmacy brand Uriage. The gel texture is cooling and soothing on the skin. It contains edelweiss which is an antioxidant ingredient. The water sleep mask retails for about €19 and contains the magic thermal water.

With drier skin types exfoliation is essential. Many people make the mistake of thinking layering on hydration products will help when in fact all it does is congest the skin. If you are sensitive or prone to redness, then avoid scrubs and harsh particles. Thankfully we are seeing the end of microbeads also.

For ageing skin, then the Image Ageless Overnight Retinol mask (€80) is perfect and is suitable for pigmented, dull and ageing skin.

The encapsulated retinol ensures a non-sensitive delivery. Don’t forget your SPF when using it!

Another thing you can do is to add a cream with an exfoliating action in it to your routine. Alpha H Balancing Moisturiser and Exfoliant (€42) is a light textured cream with ten per cent glycolic. It also contains aloe vera to sooth and vitamin E to add brightness.

Even in the colder weather we still must use an SPF when using products that exfoliate, and it’s important to reiterate that. If you just get dry patches on your skin, then try something soothing like the iconic Eight Hour Cream (€25) from Elizabeth Arden. Available in the original or fragrance-free version, this comforting balm will help to hydrate any dry bits on your face and body. This is a great handbag hero and I always carry a little pot for emergencies.

And, as promised, my Irish brand this week is Kennedy and Co. - the brainchild of Mr Dapper himself, Darren Kennedy.

Kennedy & Co Grooming is available from Dunnes Stores and pharmacies nationwide (€12.95-€14.95) and is a chic and affordable range for men. It caters for everything from hair to face and is the perfect addition to any man’s grooming range.

One of the stand out products for the modern gent is the beard oil. I was impressed by the ingredients and quality of the feel of the product. Beard oils were until recently only available in luxe brands but this one would certainly rival those. A nice blend of menthol and essential oils makes is light and fresh yet effective at hydration.

The range itself is small but perfectly formed for a man's capsule skincare wardrobe. The packaging is sleek and understated, as well as practical.
