So Last Season

Easing back to normality

Wednesday, 29th November, 2017 5:27pm

I eased myself back into work last week with a festive trip to Kildare Village to check out its new Christmas Collective pop up.

Now I’m aware some people become enraged at the mere mention of Christmas outside of December, but it’s one of my favourite times of the year, so if there is a pre-Christmas event going on, you can be sure to find me there.

Being so busy the last month or so, I hadn’t really even been thinking about Christmas, so this really gave me a gentle reminder to get started on my present shopping. When it comes to shopping for gifts, I usually buy one or two really early and am filled with an enormous sense of achievement over this.

I then proceed to feel like I’ve got all my shopping done, only to realise with three days to go, I’ve forgotten about the majority of people on my list. This, of course, leads to panic-buying lunchtime trips into over packed shops buying random stuff that I’m not sure anyone really wants.

I’ve vowed this year it will be different and I’m going to start my shopping at the beginning of December and do it all in one shopping trip if possible. I’ll let you know in December how this plan actually panned out.

I’ve really been trying to choose thoughtful gifts where possible, and I know when it comes to receiving gifts, it’s not about the expensive gifts but about the effort and thought that goes into choosing the present.

I love anything customised, so I had to order a few sheets of the Abigail Warner Letterpress gift wrapping which you can get personalised with names or messages.

As it will be our first Chrismas as a married couple, I ordered some with our names on which I was going to use to wrap other peoples presents but on reflection, I decided that nobody would want gift wrapping with our names on it, so I’ve decided to just wrap Rob’s presents in it.

There comes a point where you just have to reign yourself in. It would be a lovely idea for people with kids and I got some printed with my god daughters name on for her presents. See, I don’t think about myself all of the time!

You can also get things like crystal Christmas baubles from Criostal Na Rinne engraved with your own personal message and I really love gifts like this, because it’s something meaningful that you will have forever and get to take out once a year.

I also love all the little festivities in the run up to Christmas and actually buying someone an experience instead of a gift is also a great idea. Next week me and Mama Crowley will be doing a wreath making workshop with Bumble Bee farm, and as we are both major Christmas enthusiasts, we cannot wait to be able to make our own wreaths to hang on the door.

I’m hoping some mulled wine will be provided because really one can never drink enough mulled wine once we hit November.

Now that I think about it, perhaps this year I shall gift all my family and friends home made wreaths made by yours truly. Wouldn’t that be the ultimate personalised gift plus it’s a great excuse for a mulled wine based craft night? As if any excuse was needed!
