So Last Season

Is summer finally here?

Wednesday, 25th April, 2018 5:01pm

Now I just hate to be a weather bore, but since the said weather took an unexpected turn for the better at the weekend, I felt I needed to acknowledge this.

I feel it’s only a matter of time before we’ll all be cribbing about the heat, so let’s enjoy this brief moment where it’s a novelty to be able to break into a mild sweat while going about your daily business.

With the sunshine has come a whole new world of fashion opportunities and with it comes the return of tanning Thursday where many a woman or man around the country lathers themselves in biscuit-smelling brown gloop, in the vain attempt to look like they’ve been to St Barts for the week in preparation for the weekend.

Being a card carrying factor 50 wearer, hitting the bottle is the only way I’m getting that post-holiday glow, but I’ve made my peace with that. With that extra bit of skin on show, now that we can wear our summer clothes, I need to take the edge off my naturally corned beef complexion.

With the sun comes a renewed obsession with certain items of clothing and this week, I have been back trying on numerous printed midi dresses and trying to recreate that Rixo look on a budget. For those of you who don’t know, Rixo is a London label that specialises in beautiful, floaty printed midi dresses, but they are slightly on the pricier end of things.

But where the designers go, the high street will follow and there are some really stunning pieces to suit every budget.

H&M is doing some great floral numbers in bright colours with button up detailing and these look good styled with a few of the bottom buttons left open and with a pair of ankle boots. Topshop is also doing a great line in printed midis especially in stripes and polka dot, which is another print I’m completely crazy about recently.

For online shoppers, take a peek at ASOS or Kahlo and Apfel, or pop into Miss Daisy Blue to find some stunning original pieces. All that’s left to do is pop an oversized denim jacket over the top or a leather jacket and you’re done.

If dresses aren’t your thing, or you find them hard to get the right fit, you can easily achieve the same kind of look with a skirt and blouse and even try a bit of fun pattern clashing.

I’m also having a bit of a summer accessories moment and I’m coming over all crafty by loving anything straw, woven or macramé. It’s taking all my willpower not to completely overdo it on straw bags. I currently have two, which I think will do me for the summer, but I also have my eye on a completely impractical but ever so stylish one in Topshop which even Jane Birkin would be impressed with. I mean surely a girl can never have enough straw bags?

I’ve also journeyed back into the bag of my childhood - the bum bag - all thanks to my mother, who bought me one for holidays and I must say it’s a total delight and so handy.

I definitely plan on wearing it around town when I get back, although it’s not as cool as the Bart Simpson one I rocked when I was ten.

Lastly, I cannot get enough of woven footwear and it’s only a matter of time before they make their way into my wardrobe. Beware though, sunscreen on the feet is a must with these, unless you want very patterned sunburnt feet!
