Treat yourself? Don't mind if I do!

Wednesday, 13th June, 2018 4:03pm

In the words of the world's favourite drag queen Ru Paul, “If you don’t love yourself then how the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

Part of that self-love is treating yourself every now and again. Treating yourself doesn’t have to cost a fortune, you don’t even need to spend any money, and it can be something as simple as taking a little bit of time out from your schedule to do something that you really enjoy doing.

One thing that I’ve been treating myself to every night at 9pm is my daily fix of Love Island. I like to put my feet up, have a cup of peppermint tea and a chocolate mini roll and watch body beautiful twenty somethings navigate the trials and tribulations of playing out their relationships in a sunny island villa while being watched by millions of people.

I am not alone in my love of the show and it’s complete escapism, I’m in about three Whatsapp groups with different friends all discussing the drama of the show. Some who are reality tv addicts like myself and others who hate reality shows but just can’t resist the lure of the Love Islanders.

If anything, it’s a chance to switch off at the end of the day and the best thing about it is dissecting it all with your friends afterwards.

If you heard us talking you’d be forgiven for thinking we knew all of the contestants personally but you really become invested in their lives with the most pressing questions being does Dani really fancy Jack, can Laura really only be 29 and who will they all recouple with?

Exercise is another great way to treat yourself but it’s all about getting out there and finding an exercise you love doing. Again you can spend as little or as much as you want on this activity. I love nothing more than bringing Blanche out for a walk every morning or going for a run and it costs absolutely nothing.

I’ve also recently gone back to doing reformer pilates and I had forgotten how much I love it, leading to me to wonder why I ever stopped in the first place, but when life gets hectic it’s so easy to stop treating yourself to the activities you love to do.

I see this sometimes with my personal shopping clients who have a busy work and family life and treating themselves gets pushed down very far on the list of things to do. It’s lovely when they do come to see me that they get a few hours that is just for them and I can help them rediscover their sense of style again.

I might not go to see a personal shopper myself but getting my nails or hair done is probably one of my favourite things to do, and it’s knowing for that brief amount of time you can just enjoy being pampered, although my family would probably argue that I spend most of my time being pampered anyway but I’d strongly disagree with that assessment. I just know that it’s important to look after yourself!

So watch your trashy show, drink the glass of wine, buy that dress you’ve been looking at for ages, get your hair done, go out for dinner with friends, take a half hour to just sit down with a cup of tea and a biscuit or just take an afternoon nap when you’re meant to be cleaning the house and don’t feel one bit guilty about it!
