There’s life outside of sequins

Wednesday, 5th December, 2018 4:46pm

Remember I was going on an overnight work trip to Dublin last week and was having the inevitable faff over what to pack?

Well I thought you’d like to know that I misjudged the weather and got my outfit spectacularly wrong. I clearly can’t judge weather situations because I assumed there would potentially be a light bit of rain but nothing too torrential, when in fact, it was more like monsoon season but with cold, driving rain.

I’m blaming a 6am start on the Aircoach for the reason I couldn’t make a last minute outfit change but also that I really don’t deal well with any kind of last minute change to what I’m going to wear. It really was an horrendous journey which lasted four hours and there were a few times where I thought we were going to be blown off the motorway.

When I arrived in Dublin, I had to ferry bags to and from numerous press offices to the hotel and it was just quicker walking than taking a cab. I looked like a complete eejit carrying piles of bags whilst wearing a leopard print faux fur coat, navy velvet dress and silver Mary Janes. I mean it’s testament to us all being fallible, I suppose.

I had to make a pit stop to Penney’s to grab some new tights so at least I could change out the ones that were drowned wet. It’s amazing the difference dry feet can make.

If that wasn’t bad enough, on one of my trips back to the hotel I left my umbrella in the foyer and when I came back minutes later it was gone. I could have sobbed but luckily a replacement one was found and I was off out in the rain again.

It was all worth it though, as the shoot the next day went really well and Rosie Connolly and her family were so lovely to work with, plus I didn’t have to do too much walking around in Storm Diana either.

I’ve been very busy with personal shopping lately but I must say if you’re looking for a party outfit and don’t fancy animal print or sequins then it can be a little bit tougher to find the perfect look.

I’m personally not big into spending a fortune on pieces that you might only get one wear out of on a night out. I don’t go out enough to warrant a wardrobe full of blinged up items but of course I still want a few pieces that are dressy, especially as we are now officially in festive party zone. I especially like to find items I can repurpose again and in a different context to party time.

While I’m all for a sequin I’m sticking to printed midi dresses this year and have found some amazing ones that won’t break the bank and can be layered and worn with trainers or flat boots come January.

There’s a fantastic red satin dress in H&M which is perfect for a glam Christmas party and costs a mere €20. I actually had to recheck the price tag. Just add heels and a statement pair of gold earrings and you’re away.

I also spotted and purchased a blue printed shirt dress from Dunnes Stores which I’ll wear with white ankle boots for a night out but I’ll throw a chunky cardie and my Dr Martens boots on with it afterwards.

Any sparkle or embellishment will be added with my accessories and if you haven’t already done it, go check out the basement in New Look for great inexpensive earrings or Bauhaus for some out of this world baubles. If all else fails, throw some tinsel around your low pony tail and you’re party ready.
