Cork Profile: ,

Name and position: Ann-Marie Fleming, General Manager, Nova Broadband & Nova Telecom
Age: 34
Lives: Rochestown
Family: Single, one daughter.
Pets: None
Favourite thing about Cork: The people, the diversity and the resilience. I just love Corkonians. Rarely a filter there, we say how we feel and we love chatting to each other. We almost have a unique language with some of the most hilarious slang I’ve ever heard.
Least favourite thing about Cork:
The traffic, although it could be worse. I wouldn’t swap it for the M50!
One thing you’d change about Cork:
The rent prices; rents are rising but landlords are putting little or no effort into their property in so many cases. The homeless problem is not getting any better and charities are struggling to help. We’d love to see more donations coming through Nova for Focus Ireland for the homeless.

When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

There was never anything I wanted to do in particular, I never thought that far ahead. I was always a social kid, I only needed to know when the next party was!

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

I obtained a certificate in administration on leaving school and was employed in the training industry. After a few years I moved to the construction industry and progressed from admin to coordinating the service department within a year.

The bubble burst in 2009 and with that went the job. I covered short contracts for just over a year and then found employment with Nova Broadband (then Nova Networks).

At the start, it was twelve hours of admin a week, almost almost years later and I’m now the General Manager of Nova Broadband & Nova Telecom. When I started with Nova, I had a keen interest in sales and marketing and this allowed me to grow the subscription base substantially. I have project managed a number of expansions into new coverage zones along with a full rebrand and the addition of our new B2B brand, Nova Telecom.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

I thoroughly enjoy the craic in the office, we have excellent staff and my days are full of laughter. The wit and comedy is constant therapy and makes our day so much easier!

What motivates you?

Success. I know anything is achievable through hard work and I don’t see any end in sight. There’s no end to how successful we can be and I always want to do better.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

I almost went into midwifery at one point so possibly delivering babies in CUMH!

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

It would have to be my daughter, I’m a single parent so it’s been tough building a career while raising my daughter. But she’s almost 14 now, a great kid, very funny, loves life and laughter and I’m very lucky to have her.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

My parents. I had a very balanced childhood with love and support from my mother while my dad was very much a practical person and I rely heavily on his advice when it comes to major life decisions to this day.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

Have confidence, work hard and hard work is recognised!

What is the life dream now?

Perhaps buying a house at some point. Although I’m in no major rush to tie myself to a location for the foreseeable future.

How do you switch off?

Walking. I took it up in April this year and I am completely addicted. I walk the Rochestown to Blackrock line a few times a week and I just adore being out by the water, seeing the birds and blaring my questionable music taste (headphones - the general public is safe for now).

What is your favourite Cork memory?

Sailing, I used to sail as a young teenager with my dad and I loved it. I did lose almost all my two front teeth from a swinging hook while passing up the spinnaker sail but it was always the best fun.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

The city, I often head into the city to work on creative projects. My favourite spot is the back bar in The Oliver Plunkett; the food is good, the wi-fi is good and the staff are lovely. I pop my headphones in and I can get creative without the surrounds of the office.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

You can’t make an omelette without breaking an egg.

When are you at your happiest?

When I’m organised. I am totally relaxed when I know everything is organised.

Any regrets?

Zero regrets!

What is your hidden talent?

Singing, I’m currently looking into joining a choir. Please get in touch if you have room!

What might we be surprised to know about you?

I have absolutely no will power! I have to work really hard to fight it.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I’m currently doing a certificate in Digital Marketing at night in CIT. It’s a fantastic course, I’m thoroughly enjoying it!
